Back to Yuma

Monday, January 12, 2015

Returned last night around 7 pm and first thing this morning I went into Yuma and picked up my new dog.  His name is Yuma Arizona Laning.

Here is my first sighting of him as he tentatively walked around the corner and into the room at the Waggin’ Tail Kennel.  Unfortunately, a little fuzzy.image

The day before I left town last week, I went into the Humane Society and talked with Josie, the young lady that walked him the day I was first there and met Yuma.  She talked with the manager and explained how I had planned to adopt Yuma the previous week, but he got sick and the adoption was delayed a week.

She convinced the manager to let her call a kennel to come and get him when they had finished with the neutering procedure and he was ready to be placed back up for adoption.  I paid the adoption fee that day, the day before flying to Nashville, and the kennel would pick her up that Thursday and keep him till I returned on Sunday.

I was lucky that Josie had previously worked with the kennel and was able to get the transportation set up for me.  It has been a long road since walking into the Humane Society on that Saturday, December 27th

We have spent the first day bonding.   Yuma is already at ease in his new home.  He is a very relaxed dog and just lies at my feet while in the motorhome.

I have taken him for a number of walks today and he does not pull on the leash or rush ahead.  Always just walks calmly just ahead of me, but sometimes gets under foot, but he will soon learn not to do that.

We even found us a couple of buddies on our walk through the area today.  In imageimage

fact the baby burro wanted to nudge Yuma.  These guys are afraid of nothing.  Yuma finally got tired of the nudging and jumped at the baby burro, but it didn’t faze him.  We finally had to leave to get away from those two moochers.

I had some shaved carrots and was giving it to them.  That was a mistake.  Now I can’t get rid of them.  They follow Yuma and me everywhere.image

Here’s me and Yuma sitting outside on the zero gravity chair bonding.  I think we look a lot alike.  He may look a little smarter than me though.image

I am going to stay close to camp for a few days while Yuma gets accustomed to me and the motorhome.  The first time up the steps, I had to carry him, but he went back down by himself and after that he has no problems with either up or down.  He’s a fast learner and very curious about everything.  We will tackle the jeep another day.  He doesn’t like getting in or out of it either.

Will see what new adventures await us tomorrow.  See you later.

    1. He is the sweetest dog. I think someone has spent some time with him. He walks on a leash like he has experience with it. Very lovable and always want to be in my lap. Won't hardly let me work on the computer because he wants attention.

    1. Thanks Cindy. I am so afraid he will run when he gets off the leash but he doesn't seem to be interested in running. It will just take time to develop trust in each other.
