Palm Trees in the Canyon

Sunday, January 18, 2015

Woke up to a beautiful morning and in no hurry to go anywhere.  Yuma demands affection.  I’m trying to drink my coffee and he has to be right there with me.image

My plan for today is to drive the 8 miles up Palm Canyon Road to the mountain I have shown you in my previous blog several times.  From my vantage point in the camp, it looks like a jagged and treacherous mountain.  I would hate to climb to the top.

Based on the internet descriptions, I just follow the dirt road all the way to the canyon entrance and take an easy walk about 1/2 mile into the canyon and I will see the palm trees. Don’t know when the best time to see them is, but I am heading out about 11 am for my journey.

Heading up Palm Canyon Road towards the black area.  If you look closely, in the distance you can see the road goes right up to it.  Click on any of the photos to see a larger image.image

Getting closer now.image

Parked the jeep and Yuma and I start into the entrance of the dark canyon.  The sun does not penetrate here.image

There’s the jeep with the flag flying over it.  My camp is down in the valley behind the black rock formation.image

As Yuma and I walked up the path, everyone was coming down so we had the whole place to ourselves.  The canyon walls are steep and jagged.  Couldn’t climb out of here.image

Another couple of looks at the jeep and the desert valley below as I enter the darkness of the canyon.imageimage

The suspense is over.  About a half mile up into the canyon, I look to the far canyon wall about 100 feet up and there they are in a crevice in the canyon wall – Palm trees.

I hit the timing just about right.  The sun was just overhead displaying the palm trees beautifully.  Don’t have to make two trips to catch them in the sunlight.

Yuma and I heading back down the path to the jeep and home by 2 pm.image

Yuma and I resting after our conquest.  Doesn’t he look regal.  He must have a pedigree, I just don’t know what it is.  Anyone have an idea of what breed he is?  Looks like a Redbone Coonhound to me.  Not many coons in Arizona though.

Another beautiful day in the desert of Arizona.image

See you later.

    1. Thank you for following my blog Linda. I am trying to learn how to take good photos, but it is a challenge at my age.
      Yuma is special.

  2. Beautiful photos! We went to the Palm Canyon in Palm Springs yesterday. There are actually 3 canyons there: Andreas, Murray, and Palm. Palm has the most palms! I'll be posting photos this morning.
