Mittry Lake outside Yuma, Arizona

Tuesday, March 3, 2015

This morning, I decided to head towards Yuma, Arizona.  Our time in California is over for this year.

Because we’re only driving about 100 miles today, we didn’t rush to leave.  I waited until around 11 am when the mud and sand around our motorhome had dried up and I could leave without sinking into the mire.  We had no problem at all.

Drove down hwy 111 stopping at the rest stop that has the free dump and water.  Got that done and continued on down hwy 111 bypassing Brawley and connected with to I-8.

It wasn’t long before I was looking at the southern end of the Imperial Sand Dunes as we approached the western part of Yuma.

Passed by the small church on the hill overlooking I-8 as we neared Winterhaven, California.

Before we know it we are in Arizona and gas is instantly $1 cheaper and it is one hour later.

Stopped at the Flying J on Fortuna Road and filled the motorhome and the propane tank.  I was almost on fumes with the propane.  The last time I filled the tank was mid-January when I left Yuma last time.

Then we headed to Mittry Lake.  Always loved this mountain.  Don’t know the name of it, but it is beautiful.  Reminds me of the potato mountain in “Encounters of the Third Kind”.

The lake was crowded and there were lots of puddles from the rain they recently had.  Over half way around the lake I finally found a pullout that had a fire pit and I claimed it as our new camp.  No one near by so we are secluded.  This is looking east away from the lake.

This is my view of the lake looking west.

Our day Is over and time for rest.

See you later.

    1. Very pretty here. Luckily, the camp sites along the road are separated by at least an quarter of a mile and there are trees along the dirt road so basically I am secluded with no neighbors. It will be a nice stay here.

    1. It is a pretty area to be able to stay for free. I have been here twice and prefer it over staying at Ogilby Road west of Yuma. However, it can be crowded here. Not being too close crowded, but there are only a small number of sites along the lake and it is possible they are all taken at any one time. They have a 10 day limit because of the small number of sites and the popularity of the lake.

That little church has a history for Dolly and I. Last year, we had stayed at Ogilby Road and had passed he little church numerous times going to and coming from Yuma. So, when we were leaving in our motorhome, we decided to drive into the area below the church and take some photos closer to it.

When we pulled into the parking lot, two ladies came out of the building near the parking lot and told us that we would need to pay $6 each. We said we did not want to go in. We were just going to take a few pictures from the parking lot and leave. She said we still needed to pay the $6 because this was private property. We said we did not see any signs indicating such and we would just leave, so we just turned our motorhome around and left. We felt they were awfully proud and greedy of their little church.

    1. Thanks, Karen. I was getting almost to the north end of the lake before finding this place. I was afraid I wasn't going find a site but luckily I found this one. Close to the road but not a lot of traffic and none after dark. This lake does not have a beach area. The lake front is full of bushes and trees making it difficult to actually get to the shore. But still a pretty lake from afar.

  6. I don't know what happened. I had your blog of Salvation Mountain up but it disappeared. I know it by heart. This time I watched it on the Fire ND Kindle you got for me. The colors were really vivid! There weren't many pictues of Slab City. Did you park next to our dead friend? Did you see our strange guy we had as a neighbor?
