Salvation Mountain

Monday, March 2, 2015

This morning, the clouds broke and the sun made its entrance here at the Slabs.  However, there was a lot of mud still around the motorhome and jeep, so decided to walk down to Salvation Mountain and take photos.

It was a beautiful morning; warm with no wind.  I had expected clouds all day according to the forecast so will take this instead.

As we walked south towards the mountain, I took a few photos along the way.

The Sun Works, owned by Solar Mike, is a very popular RV solar installer and is well known in the RV community.  Many RVers come here specifically to have Mike and his crew install solar panels on their RVs.

That’s Solar Mike’s  yellow solar powered car in front of his place of business.

A few cultural items along the way.  A sign for Slab City and a tree with shoes all over it and under it.

Salvation Mountain is built into a hillside and over the year’s built up into a maze of rooms several stories high.  It is made of hay bales, trees, tires and adobe clay to hold it all together.  A lot of painting has been done to give it the bright colors you see in the following photos.

I am not going to try to explain each photo.  Just look at them for what they are; passageways and rooms all decorated in color.  Be sure to click on the link at the top of this blog to learn more facts about the man and his mountain.

Of course, Yuma makes friends where ever he goes.

The artwork is very colorful and beautiful.  A lot of love and labor has gone into this massive architectural art masterpiece.  I am impressed and admire the work that has been done here.  You could tell from Yuma’s intense stares that he was impressed.  He was good and didn’t leave anything behind.

See you later.

  1. Thanks for the pictures. I wondered if anyone was still taking care of the mountain after the man who started it died. Good to know it is still there.

    1. I believe so. There seems to be a lot of activity going on and new paint since last year, so I think it is still being well taken care of. I thought it looked very bright and cheerful.

    1. I will try the Blue Dog Food, Sam. So far he hasn't liked the IAMS and the Kibble n'Bits so will try that next.

  3. I see you now have Yuma on a leash. That's good. He might be more comfortable though if you use a harness rather than the choke collar.

    1. Thanks Gene. I will be going home soon and will no longer use the choke collar and only use the leather collar. Hopefully, that is easier on his neck. Don't really want the bulky harness on him if I can help it.

  4. Certainly a bright and colorful spot in the desert. I need to remember your wisdom when visiting the Slabs. While I don't judge the lifestyle, I am one to offer assistance when it isn't asked for or needed. I've always resented those who thought I needed "saving" at times in my life so I should know better :-))) Your new header photo is awesome! All should be dried out and warmer by week's end.

    1. Thanks Jodee. It is always a risk to offer help when not asked, and probably the risk is worth taking because there is really no loss on my part. But being where I am I feel there is a reason the person is here and maybe I shouldn't pry. Never know. The car is gone now anyway.

I am hoping it dries enough for me to leave today. The sun is out and it is going to be a beautiful day.

  5. What a beautiful testament to one man's dream and love of God. I am glad there is an organized board now taking care of Salvation Mountain and making sure it is maintained and protected. I guess it was kinda "iffy" after Leonard died, and now it seems to have gotten more settled.

    1. Me too. There seems to be a lot of new construction going on. I saw some heavy equipment at the site and a construction mobile office. Be interesting to see how things develop.
