Visit to Queen Canyon

It rained some more last night, but I could tell it was going to turn into a nice day later in the morning.  It was cloudy over the Kofa Mountains but partly cloudy overhead and it was nice and warm out.

Had a nice breakfast and relaxed in the sunshine for the morning.  With the weather shaping up nicely, I decided today would be the day to travel to Skull Rock deep in the Queen Valley.  At 12:45, we got in the Jeep and traveled towards Palm Canyon till we hit the turn-off to Queen Canyon.

It was about 4 miles to the parking area, but I learned from last year after walking 3 miles to my destination, I could drive the Jeep through the wash all the way there and save myself some agony.

We're at the entrance of the canyon.  The Skull Rock is a ways inside the canyon, so I will just take pictures as I drive along.  Must have taken centuries to carve this canyon through the mountains.

We made it to our destination.  This is about 3 miles into the canyon.  We drove about a mile further back but the canyon was starting to flatten out and we were getting close to the east side of the mountains.  However, it is probably another 20 miles of rough wash before I would hit any civilization and that is not my plans.

By this time it is after 3 o'clock and I don't want to be here after dark, so headed back the way we came.

There is the valley way down there.
Teetering rock!

Tonight's sundown on the mountains.
I must say, it may have been better to walk.  I am sore from all the twisting and turning and bouncing around in the Jeep.  It's time for dinner and a little TV before hitting the sack.

See you later.

  1. Beautiful pictures of Queen Canyon. The skull rock looks like it could eat you. That teetering rock is really something. I wonder how long it's been there. Probabaly 100s of years. Thank you for the scenic tour!

  3. -I think you were almost at the end of the road as it only goes a mile or so past the skull rock area. Also at the skull rock you can walk up to a tank several hundred yards to the left of the rock.

    1. Interesting. Yuma and I went behind the Skull Rock and walked in the wash back there but must have e missed seeing the tank. Guess we went the wrong direction. Beautiful and rugged canyon.

  4. So now we are intrigued and need to decide on whether or not we want to take that ride. That skull rock would be fun to see.
Just saw a post that Paula is still planning on being there on Saturday.

  5. I don't know how you find all these places. I've never heard of most of them!! That skull rock is cool, except for the part where it looks like it got smashed! We had your rain most of the day.

  8. That Queen Canyon drive in the Kofa Mountains is great one and Skull Rock brought back memories of being there. We went past the big skull rock but found the road didn't go all the way through and had to turn around and go back. I remember standing in that canyon with the big spiky peaked towering rock mountains on both sides. I figured we must have been in somewhere behind Palm Canyon. Why anyone would even think about going anywhere else than the southwest in the winter I'll never know. So much to see and do. So many mysteries, and so much of the old west still there.
