Black Mountain Rd.

This morning the wind was calm and warm with partly cloudy skies.  Tired from last night so it was close to 9:30 before we rolled out of bed.  Had no idea what I was going to do today.

Texted Dolly and they are having a severe storm warning.  Temperatures around zero, with wind and 4-7 inches of snow expected.  An inside day for her and Fergie for sure.

Had a nice breakfast of bacon and eggs and thought about what I should do.  It came to me that I haven't been up Black Mountain Rd. yet.  Missed the turn last time I was up that way.  Checked my map and it is only a little over 30 miles north of here, so Yuma and I headed to check it out today.  Already 1:30.

As I drove north past the Cargo Muchacho Mountains on Ogilby Road I could see it to my east.  Zoomed in with my camera.

About half an hour later, I turned onto Black Mountain Rd. It is a wide dirt road and quite bumpy.

This road lead towards all the towers you see above.  After about five miles I saw a car parked to the side of the road.  It was a regular street sedan.  As I passed it, I could see why they didn't go any further.  The road was now an asphalt one lane road heading up the mountainside and it was in very bad condition.  Many places it was eaten out by the rain water.
As I was heading up the road, I stopped to talk to a middle age couple walking down.  They had walked five miles up this bad road to take pictures.  I never would have made a walk like that.  Asked it they were okay and they said they were fine.  I headed on taking pictures as I went.

Cargo Muchacho Mountains to the south.

Made it to the signal towers at the top.

Heading back down now.

It was already 5 o'clock when I got back and had a note the gang was over at the tent, so Yuma and I headed over for a visit.
At sunset, I headed home to fix dinner real quick for Yuma and me and then went over to Tom's place where the whole gang was for a visit with a nice fire going.  We talked until 8:30 and then time for me to start on my post for the night.  Turned out to be another fun packed and adventurous day.   Hope you enjoy tagging along.

  1. Seen that array of towers and red lights on Black Mountain a number of times but we never did make it up to have a close look at them. If we ever get back that way some day we'll have to check it out. I like the views you saw.

    1. Be sure to bring a back brace. Very hard on the body driving up there. 😀

  2. Black Mountain looked like a rough, rocky area. It seemed like there were rocks everywhere. Lots of great pictures of the area. I'm glad you had a jeep and didn't wave a 5 mile hike. Yuma was keeping an eye on things.

    1. Yuma was good and stayed away from the cliffs. Looked like someone threw black rocks and black boulders everywhere. So close I couldn't walk through them.

    1. Thanks Patsy. That drive would be a good way to lose weight with all the jiggling I did. 😀

  5. You probably could have taken a microwave meal with you and cooked it right there just holding it up in the air!

    1. You're right Shirley. Pictures are not good at showing depth. Fun day.

  7. The views were worth the effort of putting up with that crappy road. The Jeep is a perfect addition to explore those places.

    1. Not a place you go by although you can see it from Ogilby Road. It's more of a destination.

  10. Glad you made it up the road. For years I attempted to make it up there from the south side, but always hit a dead end. Enjoyed your pictures.
