Canyon Lake and another move

This morning the weather was perfect.  We decided after breakfast we would head up the Apache Trail to Canyon Lake, 15 miles up the road.  It was 11:15 and off we went.

As we drove the first few miles we traveled up several BLM roads but they were in very bad shape and no better than where we are staying.

We also made a quick picture stop at the Goldfield Mine Amusement ghost town.

Then it was 12 miles of beautiful mountains till we reached Canyon Lake.  The road is all nicely paved to the lake.

Three Sisters Peaks.

One of the one-way bridges.

Dolly steamboat is located here.

Then we drove another couple miles to Tortilla Flat, a very popular and crowded little roadside strip of old buildings.  We didn't stop because there were no parking places available along the road.

We had seen signs saying the Apache Trail was closed two miles beyond Tortilla Flat and sure enough there was a big gate.

We saw a man on the trail directing the helicopter hauling material from the closed area of the road and asked him what was going on.  He said there had been a rock slide knocking out a large portion of the Apache Trail.  Now we know why it is closed.

Yuma meets one year old Duke.  Already a big boy, but only a pup at heart.
It is 1 o'clock in the morning, so I will let you know about our move decision in tonight's post.

Thanks for stopping by.

    1. It is beautiful and remote. Too bad the road up is closed. You will need to go up for a weekend. May run into a gila monster 😀

  2. That "Road" looks a bit like a road I took on the way to Alaska! (Well, it wasn't that bad I guess, but it 'felt' that bad!)

    1. This road is nearly impassable by larger motorhomes. At for mine it is.

  3. Wow, nice photos. That is a great road, but my only complaint is that it is hard to take a photo there without a power line in it. So, you've done well :-)

    1. I cussed those powerlines the whole way. I think they did it just to ruin this beautiful scenery.

  4. I would have like to see the Dolly being moved from Lake Pleasant to Canyon Lake. Have Nike keep an eye out for bighorn sheep around Canyon Lake

    1. That area is certainly large enough to hide lots of sheep. Hiking in that area would be difficult and involve more than one day.

    1. It is a beautiful 15 mile drive. They even had a live band on a Wednesday afternoon at Tortilla Flat. Some beer was flowing too.

  7. Beautiful pictures on today's blog. The water and sky are so blue. It's too bad about the road being closed from a rockslide. Yuma met another friend. That Duke was a pretty boy. I hope things aren't as bad as they look now.

  8. Nice photos. I guess that lake is part of the water supply for Phoenix? Doesn't look particularly low, so I guess the city will do OK for this year, assuming there are more where this came from.

    1. Thank you JudithK. Based on the level at Canyon Lake I bet Roosevelt Lake is full also.
