Summertime at home

Wednesday, July 26, 2017

We’ve had a quiet summer so far.  Our two old cats (both black) died within weeks of each other.  They were around twenty years old, so they had long and comfortable lives.  We are now down to one calico cat, named Chloe, about ten years old; one parakeet and then there is Fergie and Yuma.  Our family is getting smaller and more manageable.

A couple weeks ago, poor Yuma saw something in the culvert going under our road and went to investigate.  He came running back out spitting and slobbering heading for the house.  I could smell right away what he ran into.  A skunk!  Luckily, the spurt only hit him in the mouth and the right side of his head and shoulder.  Didn’t get into his eyes.

Went to Petco and bought some skunk smell remover and washed him several times, but weeks later he still has that smell on him.  Guess it will slowly fade away.  The culvert is a couple hundred feet behind Yuma.

The corn is over seven feet tall now and very thick.

There is our house hidden in all those trees.

Our original Miss Adventure trailer still sits in front of our MH.

Traveling to the southwest this winter is still a sticky subject.  Just have to wait and see what happens.  Still plenty of time.

See you later.

  1. Nice to hear from you again. sorry about the passing of your cats, but like you said they lived long lives.
We have a real good skunk recipe that was used for years on the farm.
Hope to see you again in the southwest if you can make it.
    SKUNK ODOUR REMOVAL RECIPE

    1 quart Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)
    1/4 cup Baking Soda
    1 tsp liquid hand soap

Mix well.  Cover and lather dog with mixture.  Leave on 5-10 mins.   Rinse well with warm water.

  2. Sorry about losing your cats.
Hoping to see you in the Southwest again this winter.
Kathy used Toothpaste when ever her dogs got sprayed by skunks. Simply apply on Fur, wet and lather, let set for 5-10 minutes then rinse.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  3. With the liquid soap, I used Lavender Scented Gain dish washing liquid. It neutralized the smell. You can always use tomato juice too. Have to let it on the dog for a bit though.

  4. Hey Doug I almost missed your post. I did see it come up a couple days ago but quite often if I don't answer something immediately I have a bad habit of forgetting it. While putting my post together tonight and looking at my new smartphone's orange inner cover I thought that would be great if it ever got lost with that cover open. Easy to see....and that's when I thought of the time we searched for your phone in the Mojave. And that of course reminded me of seeing your post a couple days ago. Always difficult to lose a close family pet and even harder losing 2 in a short time. That happened with 2 of our dogs back in 2011 but like you it resulted in our family becoming more manageable. Hope you guys can work something out to make another trip to the southwest possible. It's always a bit dicey at times when it's a joint decision. Not sure about ourselves right now either. For us it's a few unknown medical things. We'll know in October after Kelly has her next CTscan whether we will be going anywhere or not. I have to get by my Specialist Doctor as well with my rising PSA numbers so we both have our fingers crossed. All the best to you guys and hope to see ya'll out there in the great big Southwest somewhere this winter. Take care..........:))

  7. Wondering if you folks are heading this way again. It is starting to cool down to somewhat manageable levels. Still running the air conditioner here.
