Back to Cloud Museum

Friday, January 27, 2017

The winds started picking up at 3:30 this morning.  Not bad, but it was gusty.  It was actually warm this morning at 48 degrees, but the north wind made it feel much cooler when Yuma and I went for our walk this morning.  The high today is only going to be 60, so it will be cool all day.  This is the first day I had to stay inside until about 2 p.m., before venturing outside.

Yuma said he was brave and ready to go back to Cloud Museum, so off we went.

At the northern entrance of the lake, we came upon this burned out vehicle in a clearing.  It must be what they do if you stay over the 10 day limit per calendar year.

Just as we got to the museum, there was another boom.  Yuma would not get out of the Jeep again.  Shaking like a leaf.  This time Yuma just stayed in the Jeep and I went inside by myself. It is cool enough not to have to worry about him.

I asked the young man taking the money, what the booming noise was.  He told me they are propane cannons letting out propane and making a booming sound.  These are used around here to scare birds and animals away from the vegetable fields.  So, no guns going boom.  I went back to the Jeep and explained it to Yuma, but he still wouldn’t have anything to do with it.  In the Jeep he stayed!

I was surprised at how many vintage cars, trucks and farm implements there were packed into the place.  The young man told me that Johnny Cloud took over collecting from his Dad and that every vehicle in there was driven in.  They were all in working condition.  In fact, the reason he wasn’t there today, was because he was rounding up another vehicle to bring back.

I will just show you in pictures what the place looked like:

It is an amazing place and well worth the $5 admission fee.  There is a lot of money in these dusty old things.  Took a long time to collect them.

Made it home in time for Gold Rush!

See you later.

Brown Hills Behind our Rig

Thursday, January 26, 2017

On our walk along the road this morning, I happened to look over the embankment again, but this time instead of spying a commode chair, I thought I could see a rusty relic of some kind.  It’s hidden just beneath that tree.

Yuma and I found a place to walk down and then I could see it was an old rusted truck.

No idea what make, model or year.  Probably been here awhile.

After breakfast, Yuma and I decided we would not go far from camp today.  I wondered where the off-road vehicles went the other day, so we decided to find out for ourselves.  Remember, they went over the brown hills to the east of our camp on the Yuma Proving Ground side of the canal.

We had to drive five miles north on the west side of the canal and then drive about 50 feet over a bridge and five miles back to our camp, but on the other side of the canal.

Unfortunately, my Jeep could not go where they were able to go.  The Jeep sits too high as we quickly found out.

The grade on these first hills was getting too much for me to feel comfortable handling.  So we parked the Jeep and walked.

Yuma just loved running up and down the hills.

Every once in awhile, he would have to wait for me.  I couldn’t run as fast as him.

The views from way up there were beautiful.  In a rustic way.  Not much vegetation.

There’s the MH down there in this zoom shot.

We had to come back down the one big hill I was able to climb.  It was scary enough for me, but the grade wasn’t as steep as the others higher up.

We just laid around camp for the remainder of the afternoon.

See you later.
