Rainy day in the desert

Location:  Darby Well Road near Ajo, Arizona

Woke up with the Sun this morning and there were blue skies and puffy clouds to the West.  Maybe the 70% chance of rain will miss us. :))

Took Yuma for a walk while the coffee was percolating.  As I was making breakfast, I noticed the fridge wasn't working.  It had been just a minute before when I was in it.

Went ahead and had breakfast and then started trying to figure out why the batteries were not producing electricity.  I looked at all the breaker switches, turning them off and on, but they were all okay.  Went outside and made sure everything was plugged in and tried the reset button and it seemed to be okay.

I called Tom in Yuma and he was on a job and the person answering the phone said it would be tomorrow before he could call back. :((  Fortunately, around noon, Tom called and we started diagnosing the problem over the phone.  Took us over an hour but we finally narrowed the problem down to one breaker switch that he added the back bedroom appliances to.

It was a double 20 amp switch and we narrowed that down to the kitchen and living room plug-ins.  The switch for the back bedroom he added worked fine and everything else including the fridge.  So now the problem is very small.  Everything had worked up till this morning, so Tom couldn't understand why it would fail now.

He said I could come back and he would go through and figure it out, but I said having everything but a couple of plugs not working wasn't worth the three hour drive back and that I would work on it when I got home.  I'm sure it's something simple.  I'm just happy we figured out how to get the fridge and all other appliances working again.

While doing all this, the skies kept getting darker and soon it was pouring rain and lots of wind to go with it.  Not a good day to be outside.
So Yuma and I did the next best thing.  Rested on the couch and listened to the rain pounding on our roof.  Yuma doesn't like the sound of rain, so he laid right next to me.
Late in the afternoon, the Sun poked its head out for a short time and I looked out the window and was rewarded with this:
Double rainbow.
Then as it got dark the rains came again with a vengeance.

Cooked dinner inside tonight and tried my TV to see if I could watch Survivor, but no luck.  Not one channel would come in.  Not even a Mexican channel. :((  I guess Yuma and I will hit the hay early tonight and I can read all about the coronavirus and the current plans to slow it down on the internet on my new phone. :))  Hopefully, tomorrow will be sunny and bright.

See you later.

  1. Love the photo of you comforting sweet Yuma. That dang refrigerator! Oh well - you've got all summer to figure it out. At least it's working. You have been getting some spectacular photos around Ajo & the wildflowers are going to be beautiful. 😎

  2. Bummer about your switch problems. Should have stayed in Yuma a couple of extra days to make sure there were no bugs. 😁 Maybe with today's rain, you'll see more desert blooms. Sorry you can't get any channels! You missed a good Survivor. Hoping for a nice day tomorrow!

  4. Electrical problems can be so frustrating. I have a GFCI plug in the bathroom that trips if I turn on the coffee pot and toaster on the same plug in the kitchen. Took me a long time to figure that one out but because the kitchen sink is so close to the plug in the kitchen, it is wired to the GFCI in the bathroom. Who would have guessed. So I have to press the little red reset every time this happens. Hope yours is simple as well.

  5. GFI plugs cause a lot of problems and Lorne's diagnosis is probably right.
Everyone sets them up differently but when I wired out Inverter to the Automatic Switching Device it powers our entire Trailer.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

    1. Count it as a learning curve learning your systems.

    2. That is true. I learned a lot going through the testing process with Tom. Feel much more knowledgeable than I did before.

  6. The cactus are going to start blooming very soon I suspect. Beautiful rainbow.
You are sure learning lots about the rig. Power issues can be hard to track down but I'm sure you'll figure it out. Keeping the fridge going is of course the priority.

  8. Yup .... that's me and my puppies. They don't like loud rain and thunder and cuddle up beside me. GREAT picture!! Sorry about the electrical problems, but good you got the fridge fixed. It rained hard here most of the day. Hopefully we're good for awhile now.
