Joshua Tree National Park

Sunday, February 12, 2017

No rush to get up today.  Only have 40 or 50 miles to drive depending on which way I go.   Drank my coffee, read blogs and went with walks with Yuma during the morning.   The scenery just in the Walmart parking lot is nice.

Kept trying to decide whether to drive North to the northern entrance to the Joshua Tree NP, or drive back South and go through Box Canyon and up to the southern entrance to the park.  Both are about the same distance from Indio.

There are pros and cons to both.  Won’t go into detail, but the final decision came down to the scenery of where I would park the MH.  The boondock location at the northern entrance to the park in Twentynine Palms is a dry lake bed with no scenery.  While the southern entrance is in a valley with mountains running on the northern and southern sides.  Interstate 10 runs through the floor of the valley.  I decided on scenery and went South.  By going this route, I also go through Box Canyon which is beautiful.

With another momentous decision made, we headed out around 10:30 and headed back to Mecca.  Racing trains on hwy 111.

At Mecca, I got gas for the MH and the Jeep.  At $2.60 a gallon, it cost $140 to fill both vehicles.  Ouch!

Off we go through Box Canyon which is just East of Mecca.

We stopped for a bit so Yuma could get his run in for the day.  He loves running in the sand.

Wasn’t long before we turned a curve and there was Interstate 10 off in the distance down in the valley with the mountains across the way.  I’ll be staying about a mile or two above the interstate just before the mountains.

Here is my home, maybe for the next two weeks.  We will see.  There is a fairly strong wind coming down the mountains from the Northeast.  See Yuma’s ears blowing straight back.

See you later.

  1. Beautiful Box Canyon. I see a lot of trucks on 10. Hopefully the wind doesn't blow so hard all the time. That's a gorgeous picture of the MH in the sunset.

    1. Thanks Sarah. The wind is okay at night but not during the day when I'm out and about. Box Canyon is neat.

  5. We always enjoy that Box Canyon drive as well and I remember the wide sweeping view to the south from where you are camped. Might have to wear your woolies in Joshua Tree, it could be a bit cold there yet this time of year.

    1. Nice drive yesterday. Hope the weather holds. Mid 70s for highs will be just right. Having hard winds coming out of the Northeast right now.

  6. I was teaching at the Mecca Elementary School for 8 years. LOTS of vineyards around the school. I've only driven through that canyon ONCE (when our son was in high school)...need to get back there.
