Tucson, Arizona to Las Cruces, New Mexico

Location:  Roadrunner Rest Area in Las Cruces, New Mexico

This morning Yuma and I were up with the sun, sort of.  It was 6:30 and the sun was just popping up over the RV next door.

Laid back down till 7 o'clock and then we had a short walk and a fairly short breakfast.  Got my crackers and two cups of coffee in before I had to finish packing and start our journey back home.

We stopped for diesel and hit I-10 East at 9:30 with a goal of making it to Las Cruces, New Mexico, 250 miles east.   Our first stop about 50 miles east was Texas Canyon where all the huge boulders are.

The forecast calls for clear skies but for winds to pick up in the afternoon.  Worried a little bit about dust storms but nothing really happened till late in our journey.  Calling for gusts up to 40 mph later.

Our next stop was at the Continental Divide Trading Post.  Dolly, Fergie and I stopped here on our first trip out west.  Today seemed like a good time to revisit and get a few pictures.

Old teepee on the west side of the trading post.

We pulled into the Roadrunner rest area at 3:30 Arizona time and 4:30 Mountain time.  The distance was about 250 miles.  Only one hour behind home now.  Before getting here, I stopped just up the road to fill up the WL so I would be ready for tomorrow.   The winds really picked up just as I stopped for diesel.   Luckily, they will die down before morning.

I-10 heading down and through Las Cruces, Mew Mexico with the rugged Organ Mountains to the east.

Our drive today went smoothly without a hitch.  One down and four or five more to go depending on the weather.   Time for a little dinner and a good night's rest before we hit the road again tomorrow morning.

See you later.

  1. Hope you have a safe trip. We are heading a little farther north tomorrow and will stop just south of Dallas. Do you enjoy driving the WL and do you notice much difference. I bet it is quieter, smoother, and more stable on the road.

    1. Thanks Lorne. Im heading that way myself. I love driving the WL. Quiet and strong. Set it on 60 and so far it just hums along. I wish I had bought this one seven years ago but I probably couldn't afford it then.:))

  2. Glad your first day on the road went well. I remember both the tepee and that silly roadrunner well. Do love that roadrunner. I hope the winds die down.

    1. That's a good idea Vern. I loved Miss Adventure because she got me faithfully through thick and thin but I was so cramped and uncomfortable in it. The WL can't go to the same remote places but the room and comfort is worth it. Time will tell if the WL is as reliable.

  4. Looking at your header picture I would say you parked in the same spot we did back in March when we spent the night there. Safe travels and stay healthy.

    1. Pretty views but lots of trucks. But I slept right through their humming engines.

  5. Hi Doug, wishing safe travels to you and Yuma on your journey back home. It's been a very different experience this winter. You are going home a changed man. Our country has changed too. The White Lion is a beautiful RV & I'm sure she will carry you & Yuma safely HOME. 😎

  11. Well that big Roadrunner sure looks familiar alright. That's a great overnighter spot. You probably have mixed emotions now. Sad to leave the Southwest and all it's great memories behind but also anxious to get home now that you have begun your homeward journey.

    1. Very true. Its funny how I'm happily visiting the southwest and then something switches inside me and I'm dead set on going home now. I've really enjoyed my stay even with all the hectic activity of changing motor homes. Just one big adventure:))
