A good day finally

This morning I slept in till almost 9:30 only because Yuma woke me up at 5:30 to go outside.  😕  Another nice day coming up with only a breeze today and not the strong winds of the last couple days.

Had my two cups of coffee and 12 crackers but skipped the cereal and went straight to my half grapefruit and mandarin.  I'm anxious to see how my fridge is going to do today.  I left it off for 24 hours at 11:30 this morning hoping it would be defrosted.

A number of you wondered why a frost free refrigerator would need to be defrosted.  Here's the story I found when I googled "fans stopping on newer Samsung refrigerator".

The heating element in the newer Samsung double door fridges was made too small to prevent the cooling coils from freezing.  There is a part on Amazon with a replacement part that is much larger that will permanently fix the problem.  When the ice collects enough, the cooling fan right in front of the coils starts hitting the ice and at first makes noise then stops altogether.

I cleaned out the fridge and turned it on at 11:30 and waited, hoping it would not make noise and get up to the set temperature.  Sure enough the fridge works perfectly.  In fact, later in the day I noticed the fridge was running much less to keep temperature and that saves on battery power.

As for the batteries, with the solar panels charging them I was getting 13.6 or higher voltage.  With my older batteries I rarely was able to get 12.8 when charging.  Glad I replaced the batteries.  See how they do tonight.

Nick, Yuma and I stuck around today to clean up all the tools and get the bays in order.  It feels so good to done with the latest significant emergencies - inverter and fridge.  Without them we would be in a world of hurt.  Now I can return to the little things that need fixing around here.

As the sun set we grilled hotdogs and are enjoying three hours of Chicago Med, Fire and PD.  This will certainly test my battery power tonight.

During my spare time today I was deciding when to leave for Quartzsite.  As you know, the play-offs are this weekend and most of the games are on local channels.  Currently that is Yuma.  I'm afraid if I move to Quartzsite before the weekend I won't be able to pick up any local channels on my antenna.  With that fear, I decided not to leave until Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Let you know tomorrow how the batteries held up.  Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Sounds like a pretty good day! Nice to get things back in running order and cleaned up? Are you thinking of getting the part to permanently fix the fridge? Or too much of a pain?

    1. We had a good one finally. I doubt if the fridge will need defrosting again before I get home. Will do it then.

  4. Glad you had a good day finally...hopefully it all keeps working! I remember doing that years ago, when we were watching Super Bowl playoffs. We stayed in Barstow for the playoff games and then moved on. Good memories! :)

    1. Kansas City probably, but I picked New England in our family pool based on my standing so I hope they win so I get the pool money. :)

  7. That's great that the fridge is working properly and the new batteries are working better than the ones before. No, you don't want to miss the weekend games. You and Nick will have to root your teams on to victory. Hopefully, all major problems are behind you for this trip. 😃

    1. Thanks Dolly. Games are important so I want to be fairly near a city like Yuma to pull in the local channels. I agree. It's time to stop having these critical problems and start enjoying what's around us.
