Jeep trek to Picacho State Recreation Area

Mittry Lake near Yuma, Arizona

This morning I had my alarm set for 7:15 because I had somewhere to be early.  I actually was awake at 6:30 so got up and made coffee and breakfast.  Yuma was soon up and he ate his breakfast.  I then spent some time reading posts and answering comments.

At 8:30 Yuma and I jumped in the Jeep and headed to Winterhaven, California to meet Jerry, Tom, Deb and Deb at 9:30 at Jimmies Market.

You can read about Deb in her Blog On a long and lonesome highway....

Tom and Deb also have a Blog  Celebrating the Dance

Yuma was born in Winterhaven and picked up as a stray when he was about one year old.  I found him at the Yuma Animal Rescue Center soon after and the rest is history.

Our plan today is to head north about 25 miles to the Picacho Peak State Recreation Area.

We had two Jeeps and Jerry was our guide.  The two Debs rode with him in his four door comfortable Jeep and Tom, Yuma and I followed in my two door Jeep.

Our plan is to take the main road to the recreation area located on the Colorado River and then Jerry would take us on some remote roads near the river with beautiful views.  Lastly we would take a four wheel drive unmaintained back road West to Ogilby Road and back to Jerry's RV camp.

This land to the Colorado River is extremely stark and bare with mountains and washes.  Very remote and the road is rough in places but passable by any vehicle.  I'll show that in pictures.
Deb, Tom and Deb are talking things over while Yuma eavesdrops.

On one of our stops, Deb saw something high on the mountainside that looked like an animal but was standing very still.  We zoomed in with our cameras to see what it was and it was a burro standing very still looking at us.  The burro never moved.

I'm glad we didn't meet anyone coming the other way.  We did not see another vehicle during the entire trip up to the Colorado River.

My plan is to break this into several posts with the first post of the views driving up to the river.  We haven't reached the river yet, but I promise you will see some gorgeous pictures of the Colorado River and of course more of the mountainous terrain.

See you later.

    1. The hacker won't quit. I may have to add a security to my comments. We had a great time. Jerry wore US out on those rough back trails.

  7. I didn't know Yuma was from Winterhaven. What a blessed baby. Was he excited to see his old stomping grounds? Beautiful photos.

    1. Thank you Elva. He seemed like he had no memory, but he did cower in the car after first getting out, so maybe he did and didn't have good memories of the town. There were lots of loose dogs running around while I was waiting for the gang.
