Split Mountain Jeep Ride

Up at 8:30 this morning and it was already warm and sunny.  Going to be a great day.  First thing, Yuma ran over to visit Ripper and they played.  Talked with Brad and Renee hoping they were going to stick around but alas, Brad has to work tomorrow 😖 Very nice couple that love to travel when they can.

I was lying outside eating breakfast when they came over to say goodbye and then they were heading over the mountains to the west towards San Diego.  It was going on noon when I decided it was time to take Nick to Split Mountain across the valley south of here near Ocotillo Wells.  Takes about 40 minutes to drive.

At the end of the Split Mountain blacktop there is a sign pointing to the right into a large wash.  Last time I drove through here was in 2018 and I had forgotten how rough this wash is through Split Mountain and beyond. 😭

Views as we drove through the mountain pass and beyond.

Narrowing down ahead.

After the split mountain widened we drove several miles further to Devils Canyon and that was definitely one-way for a quarter of a mile and then we hit a hill with very deep sand.  Decided it was time to walk.  This hill is just a little too steep for us and the loose sand is a good six inches deep.

See the Jeep way down there?

I'm a little behind coming back down 😨
It was already past 2:30 so we made a beeline out of there and drove through Texas Dip heading through Borrego Springs and got home just at 4 o'clock.

I was really beat from being a passenger in that rough Jeep.  We also had the top down and received a lot of sun today.  We're certainly going to have a tan when we get back to Illinois 😁.

Rested for about an hour and then grilled steak and potatoes with some green beans.  Really hit the spot.  Time now to publish this post, have a little dessert and go to bed.  Another hard day is over 😃.

Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Always loved the Texas Dip. Such a neat road. Split mountain is a great place to go. You all were pretty high up from the look of things. Is this where the cave is up near the mountain top? I'm sure Yuma will miss Ripper.

    1. Had a fun day. I'll have research where the cave is. I've forgotten. When we got home there was another RV where Ripper was and Yuma raced over and was disappointed 😀

  4. I think I could have just stayed there under that Rock in the Jeep all day...what a spot.

  5. Your pictures are wonderful, Doug! I love the one where the Jeep is parked under that rock too! I think it would be even easier walking on the rock than in that sand. :)
Sounds like a great day and another awesome hike and views.

  7. We only made it to Split Mountain once but I still well remember the rocky drive. I especially liked the small wind caves there.

    1. Once is enough. We drove right by the wind caves and didn't think to stop. 😥
