Horse Competition coming this weekend

This morning I woke up at 8 o'clock and I could see blue skies and no wind.  But my phone said it was 30 degrees!😱  As I was looking out my window without my glasses I could see a red spec on the tree limb.  Thought is was flowering but then it moved to another branch and I knew it was a bird.  Quickly got up and grabbed my camera but by the time I got back it was gone.  I'll be ready next timeπŸ˜€  I think it was a Vermilion Flycatcher.

Got up at 9 o'clock and it didn't feel especially cold inside but turned on the heat anyway.  Dolly said it was 61 there and I looked and it was 41 here.  What happened!

While taking my walk with Yuma, it felt very nice and refreshing outside with my sweatshirt and jeans.  When I looked back towards the White Lion I saw the three horses I took pictures of yesterday, but now they had riders.

Guess they are heading for a morning ride.  There are miles and miles of trails in the Empire Ranch area for them to ride and today is beautiful.  We laid around just enjoying the nice weather.  I could lay in the sun without feeling too hot.

Around noon, two more riders came along with a dog.  Yuma didn't care about the horses but he wanted to meet their lead dog and I couldn't stop him.

As I ran over to make sure Yuma behaved, I noticed they were putting ribbons on bushes.   I knew what that meant, but asked anyway.  Yep, there is going to be a huge horse distance riding contest this weekend!  I've been here twice before when they put on their show and so happy I picked this time to be here ag.

During the afternoon, I noticed more and more horse trailers showing up over in the horse staging area.

Majestic Whetstone Mountains in the background.
The winds picked up quite a bit, so we took a short Jeep ride through a wash area where there were some big Oak trees.  Unfortunately, fire got to them too.  They were very old and appeared to have been rotten inside anyway.  Probably lightening got them.

There was one younger one still standing at the top of the wash.  Looked beautiful standing all alone up there.
Later in the afternoon, one more walk so Yuma could get rid of some more energy.  He ran circles around me!  Look at him go!  Love that Yuma!😍
Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Awesome stubborn lone oak along the wash. Lots of ponys there, it'll be fun to watch. do the dogs run with horses? I'm sure Yuma would like to join that.

    1. I liked the way the oak stood against the sky as I stood below in a wash. Yes the dog runs with the riders. There's a reason and maybe someone will explain. I don't know. Maybe to watch for snakes. Funny, Yuma didn't pay any attention to the horses. He just wanted to play with the dog.

  2. Poor old oak trees, but glad to see one still standing tall. It will be a fun weekend with all the horses and riders. I love all the horse pictures. Yuma sure is a fast - happy doggie! He loves the grasslands!

    1. Thanks Dolly. The first day he was apprehensive but now he loves it. So funny, he was chasing ravens and stumbled on something in the grass and went head over heels. Silly Yuma! Looking forward to the horse event.

  3. The oak trees in that area are truly magnificent and add so much to the landscape. For we northerners it is also so great to see big trees and walk around underneath them. It's always extra special to park beside a tree in the southwest.

  5. It certainly is the perfect spot for some horse riding. I used to be involved with trail riding and endurance competitions. Ribbons mark the trail you have to follow. Yup I think Yuma could beat me any day ... what a runner he is!!

  6. That'll be cool to see all the horses again out there! What kind of Oaks are out there? I was trying to look it up and not too many varieties grow in desert area. Emory Oak maybe?

  7. You timed your visit there again to get a nice horse show. :)
I love that tree, our oak tree at our house grew tall and thin so must be a different kind than the ones you see.
Love the picture of Yuma running around. He's having a blast! Envious of your weather but ours is certainly getting closer this week, like Dolly's. 😎

    1. I hadn't thought of what kind of oak they are, but since you and Steve ask, I'll have to find out. Sure hope this cold spell doesn't go your way. Sure glad I lucked into being here for horse show weekend πŸ˜€

  8. NorCal was attacked by cold weather but I think it's better now. Quartzsite people are complaining about the cold. I think they had 2 days in the low 60's. Where we live in CA there used to be so many oak trees. We just called them Valley Oaks. They were majestic. Unfortunately with growth and new subdivisions you have to drive out further to see the trees. That's an awesome picture of Yuma running. Sounds like you have an entertaining weekend ahead. Enjoy!
