Visiting Patagonia, Arizona

Woke up at 9 o'clock to a mild but mostly cloudy morning.  Not so bad as to stop my solar panels from working, but sun and clouds.  Luckily, it is mild with a high of 66 today.

However, they are calling for high winds tonight so better make sure antennas are down before going anywhere today.

While lying outside enjoying the sun when it poked through, Yuma ran around the backside of the White Lion barking.  When I ran around to see what it was Yuma was coming back.

The bull just stared at us and didn't move.  Yuma and I went back to our spots and he was gone when I looked again.  I don't think Yuma frightened him one bit 😀

Also, caught the rain falling over Nancy's house 25 miles north of here.  Or is that the northern lights?

After a shortened breakfast this morning, we headed out around 11:30 for a scenic drive south about 20 miles to a small and pretty little town named Patagonia.  It is very near the Mexican border.

Stopped in Sonita to fill the Jeep.  With prices at $4.19 a gallon, I told Nick to stop at 10 gallons.  I thought I must have slipped into California 😂

Fifteen miles down hwy 83, we arrived in Patagonia.

It's a beautiful, quaint little town in the Patagonia Mountains on the road to Nogales, an entry town into Mexico.

Patagonia Mountains

Hey Dad! Found my Van!

Had to bail Nick out from the jail next to the office!

After our visit to Patagonia, we went about nine miles further south to visit the ghost town, Harshaw, Arizona in the Coronado National Forest.  Only one building standing, but

they do have a small boot hill cemetery.
Beautiful big old Cottonwood and of course Nick had to climb it 😉

House with the purple mailbox that was up for sale for $229,000 last year has sold 😀
With the clouds tonight, our sunset was spectacular!

Had dinner just after sunset.  Went for the burgers and chips.  We'll have rib eyes tomorrow night.  😋

Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Fantastic pictures of Patagonia and Harshaw! That's a beautiful old cottonwood tree. I'm glad you got Nick out of the Houston. Yumas lucky that bull didn't take exception to his barking. Beautiful sunset photos.

    1. Thanks Dolly. Yes I am lucky that Yuma didn't race back into the White Lion and leave me with a raging bull😀

    1. I guess the prices are tame compared to your $5+ prices. Not much changes in Patagonia. That is a beautiful Cottonwood and Nick is the climber.

  3. Too bad you didn't get a picture of the gas prices on the pumps at the Pig Station.

    1. I should have looked. I remember working as gas attendant in the summer of '63 and gas was 30 cents.

  4. It reads like you and Nick are really enjoying your time in that area. Looking at the pictures of Nick my first thought was it would be fun to be young and see and do all of this then you said it. I wonder how much the house with the purple mailbox sold for? A lot of great pictures the last two days. Tonight's sunset there was beautiful.

    1. Very pretty site and easy to get too. You would like this one on top of a hill overlooking the whole valley. I wonder the price too. No improvements to the place. Still rundown. Finally got a nice sunset with cloud cover.

  5. I recognized those buildings in Patagonia and I think Owens is where we had some great ice cream cones. Recognized the old adobe building and cemetery in Harshaw as well. There is a really nice scenic drive from where you are over to Madera Canyon west of you. I think it might be Fish Canyon road but I'm not sure. If you get to Madera Canyon you can go a little further west to I-19 and hang a left heading south to Tubac. That's quite a little colorful place to see. From there head south towards Nogales and watch for the by-pass to get around Nogales and line you up for highway 82 heading back to Sonoita through Patagonia.

    1. Easy place for memories in Harshaw. I remember seeing the sign to Madera Canyon. May have to take that road today if it clears. Quite a bit of fog this morning.

  8. Those old cemeteries and interesting. Love that town, looks like a nice, quiet place to live not too far from the large Tucson.

    1. I don't know about living there. Pretty remote and sparse around Harshaw. But it is a beautiful area to visit. Building a new mine operation a few miles south of there. Maybe it will be boom town again😁

  9. I am pretty sure your favorite grandson is Nick, and I think it is so cool that he was able to come here to Arizona and experience our great state with his granddad. How cool!!!! Now, teach him to drive the RV granddad then someday, he can take you out on an adventure!!! Looks like Yuma loves Nick too. All so sweet.

  10. Loved your travel day today! I agree with Nancy, what a good looking grandson! My grandson buys clothes from a company called Patagonia, don't know if it's related or not. Looks like a cool little town :) I remember the purple house from last year too. Sunset picture is spectacular!
