Trip to Globe, Arizona

Friday, March 13, 2015

This morning, we woke up to a beautiful clear blue sky over The Four Peaks.

My plans after breakfast are to drive to Globe, Arizona, about 35 miles from my campground on hwy 188.  I have three objectives to achieve in Globe; so, after breakfast we headed to town to 1) get gas for the jeep, 2) stop by Walmart for groceries and 3) find a shop that will look at my RV front brakes and replace if necessary.

It was a pretty drive into Globe.  When we passed the road going up to the cliff dwellings, I stopped at a scenic view.  From there I could see the upper cliff dwellings.

As you can see from the zoomed image, the dwellings are much more preserved than the lower ones that I went to yesterday.  It is going to be neat to be able to walk up there tomorrow morning.

Went over the mountains to the south and left Roosevelt Lake in our rearview mirror.

Globe is an old town, so stopped in the old district and took a few photos.

Then I stopped to fill up the jeep and noticed a car wash right next door, so stopped in and gave the jeep a good cleaning.  It sure needed a wash.

We then stopped by Walmart, but it was getting very hot and there was no shade anywhere in their parking lot.  I didn’t feel comfortable leaving the jeep running with the AC while I was gone.

I drove up to the huge Fry’s Food Store and went around the back on the north side and there was shade from the building, so Fry’s it is.  Prices were great there too.

I didn’t accomplish my most important goal of finding someone to look at my brakes.  I went to three places and they all said they don’t do RVs.  I can’t believe a town in the middle of the mountains doesn’t do RV brakes, but that’s the way it goes.

Instead of going through Globe on hwy 60, my alternative is to drive north to Payson, Arizona on Monday.  The highway 260 route is less mountainous and ends up at hwy 60 above the mountains.

Around 4:30 pm it was so beautiful, Yuma and I drove up the mountains to the west of the lake to just walk the jeep road for awhile.  The lake looks beautiful from there.  This whole area looks beautiful at this time of year.  Wouldn’t it be neat to build a house where I am standing and have this view from your front porch.

See you later.

  1. You and Yuma had a fabulous trip today. I loved the lake scenery pictures. The lake and surroundings were surreal, but I liked all the suguarro cacti around. That was the best!! If you didn't know the cliff dwellings were there, you'd never know it. They look like caves in the mountains. It's amazing!

    1. Yes, they became fairly well known around the time they were building the Roosevelt dam back in 1900 - 1906. Roosevelt declared them a National Monument and put them under government protection.

  2. Doug, if you come down the hill into Mesa, try Roberts Tire Company... They do work on bigger trucks and motorhomes.... They put two new front tires on my class A and had the rack to do the alignment as well.... I used the one on 4747 S Power Road.... I have no interest in recommending them other than they did me a good job.... Rod

    1. Thanks Rod. May go back down. Just haven't decided what to do yet. I think I will go to Payson and see what they have available before making my decision.

  3. Doug...glad to read your report on highway 260 and Payson being less mountains. We are heading that way on Monday. We are leaving Mesa heading to the Very Large Array in Datil, NM.

    1. Just read about the Very Large Array on the Internet. I may have to stop and see that. My plans are to stop at Socorro Tuesday night anyway. Don't know where yet, but will look around for something. Maybe there is a place in Datil. Have a nice trip.

    1. I want to drive the Apache Trail but just haven't gotten up to it. The first five miles I have driven along the Salt River have been gorgeous.

  5. Doug, we head up to Payson every summer and then up by Heber/Overgaard where we rent a cabin every other summer. Beautiful country up there. Payson is a fairly large city with lots of interesting stuff. There is an antiques store right as you get into town. I believe it has a wagon out front...We love Payson and we also love our time up on the Mogollon Rim. There is a good ranger station place about 10-12 miles out of Payson, on the highway (highway 260), but I don't know if you are driving that far. It IS a fairly large grade up to it and the Rim. Have fun~ can't wait to see your pics! We are up in Idyllwild (5,000 feet) for the night, then back to the desert.

    1. Thanks Cheryl Ann. I will be seeing the Mogollon Rim for sure. I'm starting my trek back to Illinois, so will be taking 260 to Roswell, NM and then on to Amarillo, TX. Then it is I-40 home.

I will be sure to check out Payson on my way through.
