This morning I woke up at 7 o'clock and felt pretty limber after yesterday's Jeep ride. I was surprised. Took a couple of Tylenol just in case and was was up and going at 8 o'clock. Not sure what to do today, but I know it's going to be a warm one. 82 degrees for a high.
As I was fixing breakfast, I could hear a familiar hum and sure enough a paraglider buzzed the White Lion.
During breakfast, I decided this will be the day I take the hour drive over to Slab City. That way I could be doing something and stay in the air conditioning too.It was 11 o'clock when Yuma and I headed down and around to the other side of the Salton Sea. The drive went without a hitch and at 12:30 I took my first picture as I was coming up on Salvation Mountain from a distance.
Drove on up to the entrance and Yuma and I got out for some pictures. In past years, people were allowed into the rooms and to walk to the top of the mountain, but because of Covid, it is off-limits. Okay by me. I've been through it and on it a number of times.
They also have several exhibits around the area.Didn't take long before it was time to drive through Slab City and see if anything has changed.Dolly and I and I stayed overnight in Slab City years ago and I may have one time since, but the last few years, I haven't felt comfortable staying overnight. A visit is good enough.
Typical permanent housing. |
Looks like this place had a fire recently. |
I believe this is Solar Mike's place, but didn't see a sign like normal. Did a Google search and it says that the Sun Works is permanently closed.
That was all the pictures I took. The place looks the same except there didn't seem to be any visiting RVers. Maybe Covid has spooked outsiders but that is just a guess.
We had a quick trip home making it around 2:30. Enjoyed the afternoon, but the wind from the west picked up quite a bit so had to come indoors. Time to do my post anyway. It's 6:15 and I'm done and ready to fix dinner and watch a little TV before going to bed.
Good old Slab City! Doesnt look like much has changed for the better. Salvation Mountain is something to see. I wonder if they're still working inside it. It's amazing that it still looks so good. Inyeresting area.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dolly. They do keep the mountain cleaned up and looking nice.
DeleteIts been a few years since we were last at the Slabs. Overall, the condition of the place everything looks the same, yet I didn't recognize anything. Of course things change there all the time. Salvation Mountain looked more colorful and I wonder if it has been added to. We stayed there half a dozen times through the years while having a few solar systems installed at Solar Mikes. Luckily we never felt threatened or had any problems. Slab City is definitely worth a drive-thru just to see a different side of the living conditions that most of us are not accustomed to.
ReplyDeleteIt is a good place for pictures but wouldn't want to live there. Probably my last visit.
DeleteIt just fascinates me that people actually live there. No running water, sewer??, and no electricity. It has ALWAYS been too scary for me to stay there. Even Salvation Mountain has changed since he passed away. I do love to roam inside the rooms though. Too bad it's shut down. Still, it's worth a visit for pictures!
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that people like it there. I did miss going inside the mountain. Lots of good pictures in there. But I have lots of them from past visits.
DeleteLooks like you and Yuma are keeping busy! Love the pictures yesterday of your adventure! Hard to believe that people live there in Slab City! Looks like just a bunch of stuff but Salvation Mountain is pretty cool! Enjoy the weather! We are due for an artic blast this weekend! 🌨️
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve. The weather is nice here. I heard you're going to have an artic blast this weekend. Stay safe.
DeleteNever been to Slab City and have no desire to go..if I want to see homeless camps like that I'll head for Sacramento or Stockton CA. LOL. Seriously though thanks for the pictures! Glad you didn't stay there! Beautiful sunset pic!
ReplyDeleteThat's a horrible thought. I think alot of the folks at Slab City choose that lifestyle. Unlike the really poor in the cities.
DeleteWe've been there since Leonard Knight passed away. It is something every RVer should see.
ReplyDeleteToo bad Solar Mike closed. Lots of people went to him and he hired some of the locals.
Be Safe and Enjoy the beauty.
It's about time.
It was a nice day for a visit. Probably my last visit to that side of the sea. Hope not.
DeleteI met Leonard many years ago at the slabs when I was staying there for the August meteor showers. Not many folks there in August! Picked up his DVD biography at the Slab City Library. Did you go as far as East Jesus?
ReplyDeleteCan we make it 4:30 tomorrow? Sunset is after and the fire will be more comfortable at dusk.
I drove pretty much everywhere in there yesterday. Including East Jesus. 4:30 it is.
DeleteOne time I told Jerry I wanted to go to Slab City. He said "no you don't"...it would be just to say I've been there. I'm using my phone right now so later today I'll crank up the PC so I can "really" see the pictures. Thanks for travelling there for me.... lol.
ReplyDeleteHa, ha! That is about the only reason a sane person would go there. Do a search on Slab and you'll see many more.
DeleteOk. So I looked at the pictures and truthfully I'm with Jerry and Shirley Kay. I don't need to go there. I've seen way too much of this in West Sacramento and Sacramento. But Salvation Mountain is interesting.
DeleteLooks like you and Yuma have had a couple of nice adventures. Really liked that ride down Palm Wash. We have only visited Slab City once not sure we would go again but glad we did that one time. When we were at Salvation Mountain I had the feeling if it did not move they painted it. Great pictures.
ReplyDeleteWe drove thru there last year, looks much the same, though I don't remember that airplane.
ReplyDeleteI don't see any improvement from my last visit years ago.
