Caverns of Sonora – Part 1

Monday, December 1, 2014

This date has always stuck in my mind.  I started with State Farm Insurance Companies in Winter Haven, Florida on a Monday in 1969.  Never thought I would be sitting in an RV near Sonora, Texas 45 years later.

I am glad I kept bearing south yesterday ahead of the cold front.  I am as far south as I am going.  The remainder of my trip will slowly take me northwest to El Paso, Texas right on the border of Mexico and New Mexico.  It was warm last night with the fan blowing on me, but this morning I awoke to clouds,  blowing wind and 34 degrees.  It is cold but no fear of ice.  I will take the caverns tour today, so the weather will not be a factor.

I am staying right at the Caverns of Sonora, located about 17 miles west of the small town of Sonora, Texas on I-10.  As you can see I am the only RV here. Caverns of Sonora RV Park

My decision to purchase a Verizon Jetpack last month has paid off.  My wife and I have AT&T cell phones and when I went to text her last night upon arrival, I had no signal.  Sent her an email on my laptop instead.  It is nice to have both services while I travel, so I am nearly always internet connected.  Phone service isn’t critical to me, but being data connected is.  I will try to document when one service or the other or both is down for future reference.

The tour through the caverns lasted one hour and forty-five minutes.  There were 11 of us and the tour guide.  I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty and volume of the formations.  The cavern temperature is a constant 72 degrees with a 98% humidity, so walking in from a 34 degree outside temperature fogged my glasses and my camera lens so the beginning photos were blurred, till I realized the problem.  Here are just a few of the photos I took.  You can click on them to enlarge.

  1. Reminds me of Carlsbad in NM & Kartchner in AZ. I always find those underground places fascinating.
