Visit to Palm Canyon

I could hear pitter patter on the roof off and on all night.  I knew it was going to be a wet day, so didn't even bother to get up till after 10 o'clock.  When I looked out this is what I saw.

Puddles everywhere!

Rain and clouds on the mountain!

Luckily, the rain stopped long enough for Yuma and I to take a short walk and we stayed on the hard stones as to not get muddy.

Read the comments to my post and the majority went for the cute chipmunk critter and Meandering Ken hit it right on the nose.  They are Round-Tailed Ground Squirrels.  Checked it out on Google and it described them to a tee.  Thank you Meandering Ken!

Had a full breakfast except I changed from eggs and bacon to two bowls of Cheerios with a banana.  Looked to be a cloudy day, so I settled in and watched National Geographic about the Mayans for several hours.

At around 3 o'clock I noticed the sun was coming out and Yuma and I were tired of sitting around here, so we jumped in the Jeep and headed the 6 miles up to the canyon entrance.

Once we reached the parking lot the clouds had cleared and I was hoping to get clear sunny pictures of the palm trees.  I was worried I would get there too late and they would be in the shadow of the canyon walls so I practically ran all the way up the trail.

Come on Yuma, hurry!

I finally got there and it was perfect.  The sun was hitting them perfectly.  But I was tired.

The pictures above are all with zoom.  The palm trees are in a crevice across the canyon high up.

After that we sat down and rested.
After finally getting my breath back, I noticed the clouds were returning and it was time to head back down the canyon.
Looking homeward.

Yuma met a friend in the parking lot.

By the time we got back to camp it was 4:30 and time to get going if I want to get everything done that needs getting done before bedtime.  We had a great time and I'm glad the sun peeked out for a couple of hours this afternoon, so we could show you the Palm Trees.

See you later.

  1. It looks like you had quite a bit of rain. Lots of puddles. The mystery is solved on what lives in the holes in the ground. I'd never heard of round tailed ground squirrels, so had to look them up.
What great pictures of the palm trees! They are so beautiful! I'm so glad there was no permanent damage from last year's fire. Yuma always seems to find a friend, wherever he goes.

    1. Glad you like the pictures. Those squirrels stay underground till spring so that's why I never see any. This guy wasn't too friendly but Yuma handled him. 😞

  2. Good to know that later in the day is a good time to see the palms in the sunlight. Great pictures. Sounds like you and Yuma have been enjoying your time in the area. The sun arrived here at Roadrunner this afternoon, also. I know the desert needs rain so I tried to enjoy the pitter/patter on the roof.

    1. Good to hear you're settled in. Yes, the best time is around 2 to 3 o'clock. I'm glad for the rain and especially if it comes at night 😀

  3. Didn't the palms catch fire not long ago? I think I read about that somewhere. Amazing where they grow!! I'm happy for the rain. We sure need it down here.

    1. I tried climbing up to the palms several years back but didn't make it. Pooped out. Looks like they grow right out of the rocks from my pictures. The palm fire was in the Borrego Springs Palm Canyon, not here. I'm hoping things green up a little from the rain.

  4. That Palm Canyon hike is a nice one and especially so if you have the trail all to yourself. Its always amazing to see those palm trees and how they grow in that steep rock crevice. It almost looks like there are more palms there than I remember but when we were there we didn't have the afternoon sun in the canyon.

    1. I'm always in a rush to get up to the palm 🌴 in fear that I will miss the sun 🌞. I do enjoy the slow hike back down though. I went quietly hoping to see some sheep but nothing but a few chipmunks 🐿. Beautiful canyon.

  5. WaHoo for the rain! The ocotillo will be blooming in no time, we could sure use a lot more.
Palms will grow where there is a reliable water source, which makes the groves so much fun to explore. Great pictures of them!

  7. Palm Canyon is beautiful! That was a lot of exercise for you both! Great pics! Water is well needed but no fun for you! Interesting, I see the fire wasn't there and I thought it was too!
