A Hike and more Burro Sightings

This morning I woke up around 7:45 and turned on the heat to take the chill out of the place.  Laid back and read the news on my phone and blogs.  Got up at 8:30 to begin my day.  Another beautiful day on the horizon again.  Gets monotonous doesn't it?  I love seeing the sun shining in the mornings.  Heats everything up quickly including my batteries.

Made my crackers and coffee and saw Tom and Deb outside already so took my breakfast over and Yuma and I joined them.  Yuma just loves Tom because he always gives him a graham cracker. 😍  We chatted till almost noon and then went home to finish breakfast.

I don't like packing and moving all on the same day, so I packed everything today and moved the White Lion down the road and turned it around so I will be ready to go in the morning sometime around noon.

As I was lying on my lounger resting I heard a bird whizz by me and then it was gone.  Later I went into the White Lion and when I stepped into the bedroom I was met by a sparrow standing on my pillow against the mirror behind the bed.  Opened the window and it was gone in a flash.

Around 2:45 Yuma wanted to go hiking, so I decided to head up to the foothills of Black Mountain and take pictures of the area we live in.

Heading to the cluster of rocks above

Terrain is rough to walk on

Rocks are to the right out of sight

Made it
In the picture above I am looking North towards the Pit.  My RV is the one furthest to the right.

Below, I'm looking to the Northwest and you can see the Little Ajo Mountains, Ajo Peak and Little Ajo Peak.  The Pit tailings are to the right.  You can see Bates Well Road snaking across in the distance.

Below I'm looking East to the end of the tailings and where Darby Well Rd. joins into hwy 85.  I believe those are the Sauceda Mountains to the Northeast.

There's my new location close to the tower

The top of the Pit in Ajo

Black Mountain above me to the Southwest

I thought I heard some movement in the valley below and zoomed in on it and there were burros chowing away down there.  Same ones I saw heading in that direction a few days ago.  I counted five.

Isn't it beautiful?

Rough walking with all the loose rocks

One more large wash between me and home

Got home around 4:30 and pulled out the grill I had packed earlier and made two hotdogs for dinner.  Not much but good enough.  Sure tasted good.

Too windy for a fire tonight, so will be an early night which is okay with me.  My feet hurt from all the twisting and I did manage to fall twice but only received minor scrapes.  Getting too old I guess 😞

Tomorrow is move day and hopefully my last night with bad batteries.  Also, I get to go to a Walmart store 👍  No TV tonight.  Just going to relax and then bed time.

See you later.

  2. Moving to Yuma for a while, or just for batteries?

Nice photos of the area and the burros. It does not look all that busy there at the moment. I suppose it will pick up after the holidays.

    1. Thanks Kevin. Not too crowded especially further down the road. Lots of empty places. I've been here for two weeks so I'll be moving to Yuma for an extended period of time.

  5. Doesn't Yuma show interest in meeting the burros? Thanks for showing us around Darby Well Road. It's a beautiful spot, no wonder many folks stop there.

    1. Thanks Jeff. Luckily Yuma didn't see them because they were far away and quiet. He would have chased them if he had. Not a good thing.

  6. I love the burros and the bird. Some of your pictures are so clear I feel like I can reach thru my phone and touch the rocks and dirt.

    1. Thanks Elva. You must be an animal lover. I enjoy finding animals in the wild undisturbed doing their thing. Those rocks are tricky to walk on.

  7. If you keep doing hikes like that your ankles will toughen up and give you better support.
Darby Wells is becoming so popular that you are getting all kinds of visitors.
Be Safe and Enjoy your trip to Yuma.

    It's about time.

    1. Thanks Rick. It is a popular place for visitors. So much to see and do here. And the saguaro are everywhere. I severely injured my right leg and foot in a motorcycle accident 40 years ago and my foot becomes painful to walk on after about 3 miles. Bummer but I make do.

  8. Beautiful photos doug! we were supposed to go to the Southwest this winter but circumstances and my husband's Health prevented it. The sky here in Iowa is gray most of the time and never that beautiful blue even when the sun is shining. Next year for sure. Maybe we will run across you. Hope so.

    1. Thank you Judith. I know every year is not a guarantee that our plans will work out. I hope your husband's health improves and you two are on your merry way next winter. Iowa is much like Illinois so I am familiar with the Midwest winters. Hope you will follow along with me this winter and maybe we will be meeting next winter. Hope so.

  9. You should see if you can get some Fresh Cab from like tractor supply or a feed store, Fresh Cab is made for mice. We used in the fields of Nebraska and never had a mouse even think about moving in. Fresh Cab is very safe for animals. Mice don't like the smell. Using Fresh Cab the mice will hold happy hours and talk about you and warn other mice to stay clear of the White Lion. And, no - I am not affiliated or paid to promote Fresh Cab. I use myself in my RV, yard sheds, and garages.

  10. Beautiful pictures from up that hill. The Saguaros do seem to go on forever in this area. Nice selfie. Of course you saw the burros again...:)
