Finishing the Organ Pipe Cactus Scenic Drive

Before getting to today's stay at home day, let's finish yesterday's scenic drive through Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.

When we left the arches, we were then making the turn back east towards the end of our circle.  Oh, and if you go back to the double arch and zoom in the top one you will notice a support bar going through it giving the top support.

To my surprise, Deb noticed another hole in the wall or arch as we were driving down.  None of us had ever seen it on our previous trips here.

There are certain places where Organ Pipe Cactus grow in abundance

With that picture we ended our scenic circle drive at hwy 85 where we started.

I asked if they had ever seen the Quitobaquito pond down at the Mexican border and they hadn't.  Since we had daylight left, I was going to be their guide to the pond.

It is located on the U.S. border road that runs along the wall being built and we wanted to see that too.  We drove the few miles south on hwy 85 almost to Lukeville, but the road had signs saying the road was closed due to the construction of the wall.

That ended the pond idea, but we decided to drive to the Mexican border in Lukeville to see if we could get a few pictures.

Dove looking into Mexico from the top of the wall.  Is that a sign?

We decided to get out of Lukeville before someone checked us for wandering around suspiciously taking pictures.

That was it for the day.  The sun was throwing long shadows so we headed north towards Ajo.  Tom and Deb had one surprise left.  Not too many miles up the highway, they pulled their Jeep over and I pulled in behind.  We slowly walked up the road looking for a cactus.  They knew it was nearby but not certain exactly where.

Walked maybe an eighth of a mile along the road and then Tom saw it.  My first picture of a Crested Saguaro.  And it was a beauty.  Shining in the setting sun just waiting for its picture to be taken.  Thanks Tom and Deb.  Now I can put that goal to rest.
This morning Yuma and I slept in till 8:30.  It was cool in the RV, so turned on the Wave heater and I also decided to try the Hurricane heating system that is designed to provide heat to the White Lion.  I was glad to see it worked fine.  I set the room temperature to 70 and when it reached that level it cut off and then back on when the temperature dropped.  Once I get my new batteries I may just leave it on all night to hold the temperature at 58 or so.  We'll see.

Yuma and I ate breakfast and when it had warmed to 55 or so, we took a walk around our area and I took a few pictures.  It was a cloudless day with a high of 63 but felt very nice in the sunlight.  Had a little north wind to put a slight chill in the air in the shade.

My Gold Rush site :)

This is the normal view when walking in the desert here.

Visited with Tom and Deb several times throughout the day.

That was our day.  Around 5:30 I made grilled chicken, grilled potato and heated up some corn.  Delicious.   Then followed it up with a bowl of fresh salad I had made earlier in the day.  A complete meal tonight.

I've been running my generator from around 7 to 8:30 so it will keep the batteries from going dead before morning.  So far it's working.  Be glad to get the call to head for Yuma.

After writing my blog it's time for dessert and maybe a little TV while the generator runs and then hit the hay.  Then do it all over again tomorrow.

See you later.

  1. Interesting trip around the Lakeville area. Too bad you couldn't get to Quitobaquito. Its like a little oasis. What a beautiful crested saguaro! It looked majestic! I remember when we stayed right at your Gold Rush sight. 😃 Any more burros along the trail? Have a good Tuesday.

    1. Thanks Shirley. Glad to find such a nice crested saguaro. Been limping along on batteries. Running genny for a couple hours in the evening holds it up.

  4. Lovely pictures! Beautiful crested saguaro. We remember seeing one along the highway but not sure if that is the same one. Thanks for sharing, all of you! :)
Your long locks reminds me that I should sit Bill down in our room and cut his! A little too unruly for me!

  6. Finally a crested saguaro! Great picture with the crown against the blue sky. Shame so many cactus and migration routes were destroyed to build the wall :(

    1. The wall destroys things and interrupts the animal routes. Not good for either side. Proud of my crested saguaro:)
